The Helicopter
Over two thousand years ago, the Chinese constructed what are known as Chinese Tops. The propeller was attached to a stick that would be spun rapidly through ones hands to spin the propeller and achieve lift.
Late in the 15th Century, famed inventor, designer and artist Leonardo Da Vinci designed one of the more loving and pleasing ideas for a helicopter but never actually constructed and tested.
It was made from reed, linen and wire. It was to be powered by four men standing on a central platform turning the handle to rotate the cyclinder. With enough rotation, Da Vinci believed the invention would lift off the ground.
In 1480 he designed the helicopter (aerial screw). The statement “did he design it” is false because the first helicopter wasn’t built until the 1940s, it is believed that Leonardo Da Vinci designed it. He designed his helicopter (aerial screw) in his book called ‘The book called Codex Atlanticus'. In every one of his inventions and designs he regularly wrote notes about and how he would be able to make/sketch it. He designed his helicopter (aerial screw) in the late century. It was designed to compress air in order to obtain flight and it is measure to 15 feet in diameter.
It was also known as ‘The Helical Air Screw or ‘airscrew’. The invention was designed to compress air to obtain flight, similar to today’s helicopters. He used the shape for other inventions and designs as well.
